Band Assisted Pull-Up

What It Works

The assisted pull-up trains the lats and upper back as you pull your body up toward a bar. The assistance (machine, band, or a partner) lets you practice the full movement before you can do unassisted pull-ups.

In everyday life this is the same pattern as pulling yourself up onto something — getting up into a truck, climbing, or pulling your chest toward a high bar.

How to Perform

Set the assistance on a pull-up machine (or loop a band under your foot or knee). Grab the bar a little wider than shoulder width with a full hang at the bottom. Keep your ribs down and your shoulders away from your ears.

Pull your chest toward the bar by driving the elbows down and slightly back. Aim to get the chin over the bar without craning the neck. Lower under control all the way back to a full hang.

Setup & Movement – Quick Bullets

  • Set the assistance so you can do clean reps
  • Hands a little wider than the shoulders
  • Start from a full hang
  • Shoulders down, away from the ears
  • Pull the chest toward the bar
  • Drive the elbows down
  • Lower all the way back to a hang

Common Mistakes

Common issues include using too little assistance and then kipping, shrugging at the bottom, only doing a half-rep, and throwing the head back to get the chin over.

Watch Out For

  • Kipping or swinging
  • Shrugging at the bottom
  • Short range of motion
  • Craning the neck to clear the bar

Quick Fixes

  • Add enough assistance to do smooth reps
  • Think “elbows to the floor”
  • Keep the neck long
  • Own the full hang at the bottom

Key Cue

Full hang. Elbows down.

The assistance is there so you can do the real movement well. Use enough of it to stay smooth from hang to chin and back.

Scaling

Easier: Increase the assistance (more machine help or a thicker band).

Harder: Reduce the assistance, pause at the top, or slow the lowering phase.
