What It Works
The shrug trains the upper traps — the muscles that lift the shoulders toward the ears. It is a short, vertical movement.
In everyday life this is the same pattern as hiking your shoulders to hold a bag strap or bracing when you carry something heavy at your sides.
How to Perform
Stand tall with a dumbbell in each hand at your sides, palms facing in. Keep the arms long and the core braced. Do not bend the elbows to help.
Lift the shoulders straight up toward the ears. Pause briefly at the top. Lower under control. Don’t roll the shoulders in a circle.
Setup & Movement – Quick Bullets
- Stand tall, dumbbells at the sides
- Arms stay long
- Lift the shoulders straight up
- Pause at the top
- Lower under control
- No shoulder rolls
Common Mistakes
The biggest issues are rolling the shoulders, bending the elbows, using momentum, and jutting the head forward.
Watch Out For
- Rolling the shoulders in a circle
- Bending the elbows
- Swinging the weights
- Head poking forward
Quick Fixes
- Think “straight up and straight down”
- Keep the arms long and quiet
- Stay tall through the neck
- Use a weight you can lift without swinging
Key Cue
Straight up. Straight down.
No circles. The shoulders lift and lower on a vertical line.
Scaling
Easier: Use lighter dumbbells and a full, controlled range.
Harder: Add a longer pause at the top.
